Here is some stuff I did in August 2023…

One Step Ahead

If you are a member of IMPALA or an IMPALA-allied organisation, next week we’ll be getting everyone up to speed on all the big digital music developments so far this year, including the key streaming service announcements, the AI debates and just a little bit of litigation. Check in with your national trade body for info on how to access the One Step Ahead webinars supported by Merlin.

I’m going to Croatia

As Dr Johnson once said, when a man is tired of London he should get on a plane and go talk about music streaming somewhere else. So, here we go! Next month I’ll be at the SHIP showcase festival and music conference in Šibenik, Croatia to deliver a speed briefing on digital dollars and moderate a panel on picking music distribution partners. Here is some info.

Setlist is back

Setlist is back. This week we discuss the launch of the YouTube Music AI Incubator and the revelation that – when it comes to music and AI at least – YouTube has some principles! And Universal Music is endorsing them! Crazy times. We also discuss all the questions posed by BMI’s reportedly imminent big bucks private equity sale. Check it out via your podcast app of choice or here on the CMU website.

ThreeWeeks 5/5

As we enter the final phase of Edinburgh Festival 2023, we have gathered together all the 5/5 ThreeWeeks reviews for shows that are still performing this week – and here they are. I’ve dished out three 5/5 ratings myself this year, so that’s Three To See from me. One of those was for Martin Urbano, who I note has just been nominated for the Best Newcomer prize in the good old Edinburgh Comedy Awards. He’s really good.

Even more Edinburgh

I got to see another bunch of great shows during my second stint in Edinburgh, including comedy musical duo Die Roten Punkte. Well, technically they’ve split up – or at least are on “hiatus” – and Otto and Astrid are each doing a solo show. Albeit on the same stage at the same time. But is a reunion likely? After seeing the show I sent them some questions.

Festival fly pasts

Has anyone ever presented an award to the performer who best integrates the noise from an Edinburgh Military Tattoo flypast into their Fringe show? I was watching Ikechukwu Ufomadu in one of the Pleasance bunkers when the red arrows flew over yesterday. Seemingly unaware that Tattoo flypasts are an occasional feature of the Edinburgh Festival – and therefore rather confused by the noisy interruption – he mused that, whatever was happening out there, the best place to be was probably in a bunker.

More shows

I am back in Edinburgh to see more comedy and a bit of theatre, to do lots more reviewing and a bit more interviewing, and probably eat a lot of chips. This was my favourite during a pretty strong set of shows that I got to review last weekend, let’s see how things go this time!

Edinburgh reviews

I’m back in London after my first Edinburgh jaunt of the month. I now have some reviews to write and podcasts to publish. Favourite show so far I think was ‘André de Freitas: What If’. Reviews from the wider ThreeWeeks review team are now appearing on the website and there’ll be another batch in the TW Extra bulletin tomorrow, so do check them out if you’re at the Festival this year.

More Edinburgh

I actually made it to the Edinburgh Comedy Awards lunch this year, which was lovely. And with a Chris Cooke friendly menu! Thanks to Nica and the team. With a lunchtime full of comedy chat my next ThreeWeeks Q&A is obviously … from the theatre programme: Faizal Abdullah talking about his fascinating show ‘Who Took My Malay Away?’ That is here. And now, I’m off to review some shows.

Edinburgh bound

I am Edinburgh bound for the Fringe’s Meet The Media event. I’m also planning to record some podcast interviews over the next couple of days – probably should organise some of those! Plus I’m also doing some Q&A interviews on the ThreeWeeks website this year, for the first time in a while. Starting with Crizards, talking about their “wonky war epic” ‘This Means War’. You can read that here.

ThreeWeeks time

Edinburgh Festival 2023 is here already! Which means it’s ThreeWeeks time again. Caro is busy recommending shows to see in handy sets of three, so if you want some Fringe suggestions, do check them out on the website – I’ll be in Edinburgh this weekend doing some interviewing and reviewing, so let’s see how many conversations and shows I can fit in.
