September 2026

AI deals

If you thought my diagrams showing how streaming royalties flow were complicated, just wait until I start doing diagrams for AI royalties. Though there are still lots of questions about how the music industry’s AI deals are going to work – starting with: will the recording and song earn the same? IMPF and IMPEL say the song must be valued “at least equally with the recording” in AI deals – that’s “non-negotiable”. Read my CMU report on that here.

Fair use debates

Pretty much all of the copyright cases against AI companies in the US swing on whether or not AI training is ‘fair use’ under American copyright law. The copyright industries are adamant IT IS NOT. But Donald Trump’s Department Of Justice recently told the New York court where OpenAI is being sued that IT IS. The newspapers involved in that case have now responded – and here’s my CMU report on that.

Keep Standard Premium

When they nationalise the Avanti West Coast line, can they keep Standard Premium tickets? ie first class seat but without the sandwiches I don’t eat and the alcohol I don’t drink. That way I can continue to book my favourite seat without having to pay extortionate first class prices.

October conferences

With September almost done and dusted, here are the October conferences I’ll be attending this year – the IBA Annual Conference in Copenhagen, Pro Weekend in Castellón and Un-Convention in Manchester, where I will be respectively discussing free speech, music streaming and AI, a very interesting mix of topics. Hope to see some of you at some of them.

Output 2026

Fun time here in Belfast at Output – chatting to Cameron Craig and Jill Hollywood about our new Producer Deals Guide, plus a great panel to inform our ongoing Pathways Into Music work helping music educators to help young people pick up industry and entrepreneurial skills and knowledge. And lots more interesting conversations off stage too!

Back to Belfast

When I landed at Belfast City Airport last year ahead of the magnificent Output conference, I called the taxi company and kept pressing nine “for account bookings”, without success, until I realised I’d somehow switched to another keypad and had just called the emergency services! So let’s see how I do when I land this year.

Culture news

As well as writing about key music business developments each weekday, every Tuesday I also report on two developments in the wider cultural industries from the previous seven days. This week: Equity has again called on the UK government to introduce a new publicity right to protect performers in the context of AI, plus more on the Leicester Comedy Festival collapse. Check both at thisweekculture.com.

GearCon thanks

Thanks to the GearCon team for hosting me, Cameron Craig and Jill Hollywood yesterday for our discussion on how music producers get paid in 2026, based on the Producer Deals Guide we published earlier this year. It was a great conversation with some great audience questions too. If you’re heading to Output this week, we’ll be presenting this session there as well, Thursday morning at 11.30am.

Output 2026

I know I’m posting about conferences all the time at the moment – but it’s that time of year! And I always really enjoy my trips to Belfast for Output – this year I’m moderating sessions on our new Producer Deals Guide and our latest Pathways Into Music work. Hope to see you there!

Free speech debate

Next month I’m heading to the annual conference of the International Bar Association in Copenhagen to join a discussion on music, art, protest and freedom of expression. Partly because I’m almost as interested in the legalities of free speech as I am in copyright law (maybe even more so some weeks). And partly because there’s rather a lot to say on this topic at the moment! I’ll let you know what I learn during the debate…

Culture news

As well as writing about key music business developments each weekday, every Tuesday I also report on two developments in the wider cultural industries from the previous seven days, with both of today’s stories theatre-focused. You can check those out on the ThisWeek Culture website – or sign-up to our TW Weekly bulletin to get those articles plus Caro’s latest London culture tips and interviews.

More conferences

I’ll be at two more conferences this month – GearConLDN this weekend and Output in Belfast next week – discussing our new Producer Deals Guide at both. Then looking ahead to next month, I’m excited to be returning to Un-Convention in Manchester to talk about all things music and AI, on which there is an awful lot to say at the moment.

I’m in Aberdeen

I’m in Aberdeen, which is the furthest north I’ve ever been in this United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Though I’ve been to Bergen in Norway a few times and assume the Bergensere think of Aberdeen as “down south”. Anyway, glad to be this far north to attend Aberdeen Music Week with the in-person conference sessions later today!

Aberdeen Music Week

Looking forward to heading to Aberdeen Music Week this week. The Wednesday sessions are all happening online, with some very interesting discussions planned. There is info on all that and how to sign up here – then I’ll be moderating some conversations in-person on Thursday.

Digital music slide

I was updating one of my music rights slides this week and noticed I still had ‘metaverse’ listed as a category of digital platforms that use music. Which I added back when people were constantly talking about the metaverse. Which no one does anymore. But what to replace it with to avoid having to redesign the boxes on my slide? I went with ‘B2B streaming services’ – they should probably be on there right? Or is there another category of digital platforms I should have added? Do these new fangled AI mash-up services deserve a box?

Today’s AI story

What’s this – another AI story at the top of today’s CMU Daily? Well, yes, because the lawyers at Donald Trump’s Department Of Justice have formally communicated their strong support for OpenAI’s fair use defence in its copyright battle with the New York Times. Because of course they have. Tomorrow I’m going to write about ticketing for a change. Promise. But for now, here’s today’s AI story.

Latest Suno lawsuit

I know if feels like we’re reporting on music industry lawsuits against AI companies every day of the week at the moment – most of which are in the US courts and involve more or less the same arguments – but this one is totally different. Instead of accusing Suno of copyright infringement, it alleges that Suno is violating the publicity rights of musicians by exploiting their names and “identifying attributes”. Read my CMU report here.

Fringe dates debate

Should the Edinburgh Fringe shift itself forward a week next year? And if so, would the Edinburgh International Festival shift too? Or would we end up with a situation like in the 2000s when they had different dates, resulting in a four week Edinburgh Festival? I may have a vested interest here, but I do prefer it when the Edinburgh Festival is a three week event! Anyway, here’s my ThreeWeeks report on the current Fringe dates debate.
